An exploration of students' perception of the implementation of language policy : a case study of the Cultural and Heritage Tourism Programme at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Howard College.
Abstract
People communicate ideas and information through language. Communication is very important for people to understand each other, and language plays an important role in disseminating information and cooperation between individuals. This study explored the perceptions of the first year students at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Howard College Campus regarding the implementation of Language Policy in the Cultural and Heritage Tourism (CHTM) program. This study employs Policy Implementation Theory. Both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies were applied to explore the perceptions of students. It provides a descriptive analysis of the students’ perceptions of the implementation process used by the university. The findings revealed that the majority of students are dissatisfied with the language policy that is in place. Drawing from the findings, the inclusion of students and dissemination of information to students is recommended.
