Abstract

Access to quality education is the constitutional right of every citizen of South Africa. Ensuring education is provided to all in a manner that every learner benefits no matter which the school or institution is the duty of the education department. Some institutions produce more quality learners than the others because of various factors, from its governance to training and the environment the learners are exposed to. The educators are trained to have understanding in which the learners perform and use different tools and methods in evaluating the performance of the learners. The main purpose of this study is to investigate those factors that affect leaners performances from a teacher’s perspective at Phoenix Muslim School. As well as to understand these factors and how they impact learners positively and negatively. This research study investigated four factors namely cultural, social, behavioral and individual in order to determine its effect on learners’ academic performance. The research problem has been derived from these four factors i.e. cultural, social, Behavioral and individuals to determine learners’ performance. By understanding these factors, it will Impact positively on the overall academic performances of learners and can be part of the Phoenix Muslim School policy making process. The aim of this study was to conduct research through a survey and responded by the academic staff of Phoenix Muslim School to understand these four factors. Also each factor was studied in detail and also different aspects of each factor. A conceptual concept is drawn to create a link between these factors and learners academic performance from the teachers perspective. The findings from the questionnaire were then analyzed using various statistical tests to explain the positive or negative relationship between these factors and learners academic performance. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were deployed during the investigation phase. This study being a first in the school will open a debate for future studies along these lines to study other factors surrounding the common problem of improving quality education in Phoenix Muslim School in particular and South Africa in general.
