dc.description.abstractIn this study, the reading responses of Township Christian women in Southern Africa to Mary Magdalene in the Gospel of John are explored. The study concludes that Mary Magdalene, in the Gospel of John can empower the lives of these women. This thesis also compares the role of Mary Magdalene in the death rituals of her time and the roles of the Southern African women in the death rituals of their loved ones.en
