This paper argues that an adequate definition of poverty is necessary for the church if it is to make a positive contribution to poverty alleviation. The definitions of Amartya Sen, Klaus Nurnberger and Bryant Myers are examined in the light of the Biblical witness of the Old and New Testaments. Building on the definition of Myers, the essay then explores some possible strategies for the church in poverty alleviation such as building healthy relationships, using the pulpit, and affirming the poor as agents of their own transformation.en
