| dc.description.abstract | Workarounds are goal-driven activities that change the standard way of working in order to overcome an obstacle. There is an abundance of research into workarounds implemented in public healthcare settings by nurses; however there is little or no research into the implementation of workarounds by clinical psychologists. The current study aimed to explore the use of workarounds by South African clinical psychologists during their community service year and applied ethical codes of practice to understand the decision making and the ethical implications of implemented workarounds. The data was organised into quantitative descriptive statistics and analysed qualitatively using a framework method of analysis with the ethical code of practice as the analytical frame. The results of this research reveal that clinical psychologists in public healthcare settings do implement workarounds as ways to manage obstacles in their working environment. The data revealed a small number of obvious violations of ethical codes of practice. Additional research into the use of workarounds by clinical psychologists would be beneficial, particularly into further understanding the nature of obstacles encountered and the motivation for the particular choice of workaround. | en_US |
